LAFAYETTE, La. – Freshman QB Austin Howard threw for 181 yards and one touchdown in his Southern debut but UL Lafayette posted 512 yards of total offense in a 45-6 route at Cajun Field Saturday night.

The Ragin Cajuns sprinted out to a 24-0 halftime lead before Howard, a West St. John product, orchestrated a 10 play, 80 yard drive that ended with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Bradley Coleman to trim the margin to 18.

UL would close the game scoring 21 unanswered point to provide the final score.

Willie Quinn posted his second consecutive 100-yard receiving game in the loss. Quinn, a Miami native, led all SU receivers with 8 catches for 105 yards. His previous 100-yard game came in the 2013 SWAC Championship in Houston when Quinn had 7 receptions for 142 yards and 2 TD.
Despite the Ragin Cajuns offensive totals, Southern forced Baton Rouge native Terrance Broadway into two interceptions – each recorded by true freshman (Bryan Anderson and Danny Johnson).

The highly-anticipated game produced the third largest attendance in UL history with 36,170 Jaguar and Cajun fans filling the seats.

The Jaguars will look to regroup next Saturday when they host Central Methodist of Missouri in the home opener at A.W. Mumford Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
